DENTAL FLUOROSIS

DENTAL   FLUOROSIS:

Mottling of tooth enamel
Developmental disturbances dental enamel
Caused by excessive exposure to high concentration of fluoride
Teeth become rough with brown/yellow patches on their surface
Occurs at the age of 0-6 year only

Mild:

Opaque white areas covering less than 50% of the tooth surface

Moderate:

All tooth surfaces affected marked wear on biting surfaces brown stain may be present

Severe:

All tooth surfaces affected, discrete or confluent pitting, and brown stain present

Causes:

Inappropriate use of fluoride containing dental products such as toothpastes and mouth rinses
Taking a higher than prescribed amount of a fluoride supplement during early childhood

Taking a fluoride supplement when fluoridated drinking water of fluoride fortified fruit juices and soft drink already provide the right amount
